The short version
You can watch every Network on Academix.TV without an account. We do not ask viewers for a name, email address, birthday or any other personal detail. We do not store your IP address, and we set no cookies for viewers. There are no advertising trackers or analytics scripts on viewer pages.
What we collect when you watch
Each time you tune to a Channel, the player records one line so a Network can count its viewers:
- A random session id. 24 random letters and digits made by your browser for that tab. It is not tied to you, your device or any account, and a new one is made every time you reload the page.
- Your UTC offset. The difference between your clock and UTC in minutes (for example, minus 420 in Los Angeles in summer). It is not your location and we store no city, region or country.
- Tune-in state. Which Network, Channel and programme you tuned to, how you arrived (the Network page, a direct Channel link or a channel switch), how far into the programme the tune began, whether the Channel was on its schedule, live or on a fallback, and the time of the tune.
- Watch time. While a programme plays in a tab you can see, the player sends the same random session id every 30 seconds, and nothing else, so the line can count how many seconds were watched.
That is all. We never store your IP address, your browser or device type, your time-zone name, or any location.
What stays on your device
The player remembers your sound and caption choices in your browser's own storage so they carry over between pages. These settings never leave your device.
How long we keep it
Tune-in records are deleted automatically after 90 days. Daily totals (numbers of tune-ins and viewers per Network, Channel and programme, with no session ids) are kept so Networks can see their audience over time.
Videos from other services
Some programmes play from other services. When one of them plays, your browser connects to that service directly, and it receives your IP address and browser details under its own privacy policy:
- YouTube (Google). We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, and the YouTube player loads only when a YouTube programme actually plays. On Networks made for children, YouTube never loads at all: you see a short note that the programme is not available on that Network, and nothing reaches YouTube.
- Vimeo. Played with Vimeo's “do not track” setting on.
- Streaming and file hosts that carry a Network's video.
The site is hosted by Netlify and its data is stored by Convex. Like any web host, their systems see your IP address when your browser connects; we do not copy it into our records.
Children's privacy
Many Networks on Academix.TV serve schools, libraries and families, and their viewers include children under 13. We built the viewer side so that it does not collect personal information from anyone, children included, as the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) defines it. The random session id is used only to count viewers and keep the service running; it is never used to build a profile, target advertising or follow anyone across sites.
When a school or district uses Academix.TV for K-12 purposes, we follow California's Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA): we do not sell viewer information, use it for targeted advertising, or build profiles of students, and we have no student accounts or student records. Networks for children carry sponsorship messages only, never commercial advertising.
Staff accounts
People who run a Network sign in with an invited account. For them we keep a name, an email address, their role and a log of the changes they make. Sign-in is handled by Clerk. Viewers never need an account.
Questions and requests
To ask a question, or to ask us to delete information, contact Academix at [privacy contact to be added before launch]. A parent or school can also contact the Network they watch. Because viewer records hold no name or contact detail, we cannot look up one person's viewing, which is the point.
We will post any change to this notice on this page and update the date above.
